Nashville Caroling Company Adds Green Hills Mall Performances

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (November 2012) -- The Nashville Caroling Company will add Victorian cheer to the holiday season with special performances in November and December at Cheekwood Mansion and Green Hills Mall.

      *  The popular quartet will present their "Songs of Christmases Past" caroling concert from 2-3:30 p.m. Nov. 24 at Cheekwood Mansion, 1200 Forrest Park Drive in Belle Meade.

      *  Green Hills Mall shoppers will hear renditions of classic carols from 10-1 p.m. on selected Wednesdays (Dec. 5, 12 and 19) and from 2-5 p.m. on selected Fridays (Nov. 16 and 30; Dec. 7, 14 and 21).  Green Hills Mall is located at 2126 Abbot Martin Road in Green Hills.

The Nashville Caroling Company's "Songs of Christmases Past" concerts feature a cappella performances of holiday classics such as "Silent Night", "The First Noel", and "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen". The quartet, which was founded in 2008, is known for its breathtaking mix of unaccompanied soprano, alto, tenor and bass vocals.  Although the act specializes in sentimental Christmas classics, it's not uncommon to hear a rendition of the children's sing-along, "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer!".

The group's repertoire was specially arranged for four-part harmony by composer and Broadway conductor Jeff Lisenby.  The singers will be dressed in authentic Dickens-style top hats, coats, ties and dresses designed by Nashville costumer Pam Lisenby.

The "Songs of Christmases Past" show at Cheekwood will occur in the mansion's drawing room, which is adorned with 20-foot high ceilings, marble floors, chandeliers, and fine art.

"We plan to perform carols that the Cheeks would have sung in their home during the 1930s," said group co-founder and vocalist Jaclyn Brown.

The Nashville Caroling Company features a dozen singers who rotate in fours (quartets) from show to show.  Members include Sam Allen (lead singer/No Other Name), Jaclyn Brown (quartet co-founder/host of "Chick Singer Night Nashville"), Ryan Greenawalt (background singer/Lady Antebellum Christmas album),
Erica Haines (quartet co-founder/Belmont University music faculty), Jeff Lisenby (conductor and musical director/Broadway), Jenny Slate Lee (singer-actor/Alabama Theatre in Myrtle Beach), Will Sevier (music minister/Hermitage United Methodist Church), Adam Smith (lead singer/Krystal Keith), Jennifer Akers (singer/Matt Davenport Productions), and Sarah Valley (Christian Recording Artist/Lifeway).

"Most cities have carolers that will sing for you," noted group co-founder and singer Erica Haines.  "But where else can you find truly musical performers than in Nashville? We don't just sing songs that everyone already knows.  We make them original with new arrangements and crowd participation and interaction. There is always something new to hear and see."

"I love caroling with NCC," said singer Jenny Slate Lee.  "It is the best feeling to make someone smile and spread a little Christmas cheer. That is what the season is all about."

"When we sing, all we see is smiles," said Jennifer Akers.

The quartet also has performed at holiday events hosted by Hilton Hotels Corp., HCA Healthcare, the Tennessee Titans, Sumner Crest Winery, National Healthcare Corp., F&M Bank, Gaylord Opryland Hotel, Vanderbilt Unviersity, Lipscomb University, Macy's Department Store, Richland Country Club, and Faith Freewill Baptist Church in Columbia, Tenn.

All of the Nashville Caroling Company's performances are free.  Paid Cheekwood admission is required on Nov. 24.  For Cheekwood ticket information, visit http://www.Cheekwood.org.  To learn more or to book The Nashville Caroling Company, call (615) 491-4766, send an email inquiry to reservations@thenashvillecarolingcompany.com, or visit http://www.TheNashvilleCarolingCompany.com.

Individuals can learn more about the artist/instructor and view her artwork at http://www.gailmcdanielart.com.

McDaniel has taught watercolor workshops on three continents and in Central America.  More than 1,100 different artists from 36 different states (including Alaska and Hawaii), the District of Columbia, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Guatemala, Japan, Mexico, the Philippines and South Korea have studied with the artist. She has taught 11 workshops at historic Ghost Ranch in New Mexico, a landmark where the late Georgia O’Keefe lived and painted.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for developing watercolor artists," said McDaniel, a traditional watercolor artist who is best known for her vibrant use of colors when depicting images from nature and real life. "I'll be demonstrating the techniques, shortcuts, and concepts that I have developed or learned by doing, reading or studying with others.  I show my students everything I know, holding nothing back.  My goal is to inspire them without making them feel overwhelmed."

McDaniel has helped raise almost $90,000 for the arts in area public schools through the "Students and Friends of Gail McDaniel Awards".  The fund-raising effort earned McDaniel and her husband, Ken, a nomination in the "volunteer innovator" category of the 2009 Mary Catherine Strobel Award.  She was invited to be the featured artist for the "Martin's Master Show" in Brentwood, Tenn., in November 2009.  She recently received an award for "Excellence in Community Service" from the Travelers Rest Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was inducted into the Cave City, Ky., Hall of Fame.  The PENCIL Foundation in Nashville named her 2012 "Volunteer of the Year".

In 2005, McDaniel was commissioned to paint the invitation cover for "A Little Night of Music", a PENCIL Foundation fund-raiser starring LeAnn Rimes.  A local newspaper spotlighted the artist after she created a poster commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce.

McDaniel, who lives in Williamson County, gained international notoriety in 2001 when she was named an associate member of the Winsor & Newton Creative Artist Network in London, England, and invited by directors of the "Art in Provence" program to conduct an eight-day watercolor workshop in Dieulefit, France.

A native of Kentucky, she has studied under 36 noted watercolor instructors.  The artist’s reputation as a budding artist grew in 1984 when she was commissioned to paint a family landmark by Kentucky Governor Louie B. Nunn. She has had 51 solo exhibitions during her career.  The Brentwood Public Library hosted her first Tennessee solo art exhibition in 1994.  In 1996 and 1997, she was invited to design the theme poster for the Nashville Symphony’s "Italian Street Fair".  In 1998, she was commissioned to paint 18 watercolor paintings for a permanent collection at the newly opened Marriott Hotel and Convention Center in Franklin, Tenn.  A year later, she was commissioned to paint 13 pieces for the annual Nashville Scene N-Focus social calendar.

In 2000, she became a member of the arts faculty of Cheekwood Botanical Garden & Museum of Art in Nashville, teaching weekly art classes.  In 2001, she traveled to Giverny, France, and painted in Monet’s Garden. The same year, she was commissioned to paint a promotional streetscape of four homes for Newmark Homes and five other paintings for the Nashville Home Builders Association/SunTrust Bank 2001 "Parade of Homes". She has judged local, regional and statewide art shows, including a statewide competition at the Tennessee State Fair in Nashville.

Earth Mama to Join Other Artists for 'Grayson County Day at Heartwood'

INDEPENDENCE, Va. (November 2012) – Environmental songstress Earth Mama (a.k.a. Joyce Rouse) of Independence, Va., will celebrate the release of her latest CD, "Blessings of the Universe", with live performances, CD signings, and music composing demonstrations from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Nov. 16 (Friday) at the Heartwood Artisan Center, 1 Heartwood Circle in Abingdon, Va.

Earth Mama will participate in the center's daylong "Grayson County Day at Heartwood" with solo performances at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.  The arts and culture event also will feature artwork displays by Grayson County artists such as painters Kathye Mendes and Todd Price, woodworker Terry Clark, heritage broom maker John Alexander, and pottery artists David and Sherry Hoffman.

Rouse also will join fellow artists at 4 p.m. for a collaborative arts finale performance. Admission is free. Proceeds from the sale of CDs, handcrafted quilts, and other donated items will benefit Grayson Backpack Ministry, a community outreach providing nutritious meals and snacks to children.

Rouse describes her new project as "inspirational songs for the foreground and background of your days". The vocal and piano-centered CD takes listeners on a soulful and lyrical journey of gratitude, reassurance, hope and wonder with heartfelt praises of God and all God's creation.

A number of songs on "Blessings of the Universe" were commissioned to mark milestones for various faith-based organizations.  Others were written as musical blessings or prayers for a well-drilling project in Africa, women's events, and a solar energy conference.  Several musical short stories reflect on the "kin-dom" journeys of great religious figures, including Mary Magdalene and Saint Francis of Assisi.

The album was recorded in Nashville, with Rouse serving as lead vocalist, songwriter and producer. Some of the selections feature stirring accompaniments by pianist/vocalist Catherine Styron, guitarist Pat McGrath, and percussionist Paul Scholten.  Earth Mama plays grand piano on "Follow the Sun".

"The Sisters of St. Francis, the Sisters of Earth, and other organizations inspired me with their depth of love and concern for people and places on the margins -- women who walk miles each day to carry their family's water, those with serious mental and physical health issues, and ecological unraveling," said Rouse, who wrote most of the songs at her home in the Appalachians.  "These songs express in some way my gratitude for this journey. When I sang them at events, they caught on in a kind of folk song way and were then carried gently out into the world.  The whole project felt like the unfolding of the Universe".
