June 21-23 (Tuesday-Thursday) -- Puppet troupes and audiences from all over the world will gather at the Downtown Public Library and neighboring venues for the "Nashville International Puppet Festival". For three days, highly acclaimed, amazing performers will transform the library and Church Street Park into a magical and mesmerizing showcase. A "Puppet Parade" will occur at 9 a.m. Saturday with a band, floats, artists, musicians, dragons, and larger-than-life marionettes, with Mayor Karl Dean serving as Grand Marshall. PR Career Building -- Artists and entrepreneurs of all kinds can learn the nuts and bolts of the public relations process (and receive career-changing advice) by attending "Publicizing Your Dream" brainstorming sessions in Nashville. The sessions are specially designed for artists with specific communication needs. Attendees can learn all aspects of publicity, including how to develop a PR game plan, finding the perfect hook for news coverage, honing your writing skills, writing a press release, editing techniques, and creating a newsworthy event. Jazz Losing Its Place in Popular Media (By Ron Wynn) -- As a youngster, my two primary outlets for learning about jazz and many other musical styles were radio and magazines. In both South Georgia and East Tennessee (the two areas where I grew up) there were black formatted stations that aired jazz, blues and gospel programs during the weekends and early morning hours. During those days such magazines as Esquire, Ebony, The New Yorker, The Atlantic (it was Atlantic Monthly then) The Village Voice, even Harper's and the Saturday Evening Post either regularly or periodically included jazz coverage. Today, it is extremely rare when you see jazz articles in any major or mainstream general interest magazine. With a notable handful of exceptions (New York Times, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune and Sun Times, New York Daily News, LA Times to cite a few), newspapers have abandoned jazz and blues artists, shows and recordings. More than 400 songwriters in all genres will take the stage along Demonbreun and Division streets from noon-midnight Friday-Sunday at venues such as Aloft, Best Western Music Row, Citizens Bank Patio, Keeli's Co-Writers Corner, Otters, Soulshine Pizza Factory, the Studio 33 Tent, and The Row Kitchen & Pub. The Best Western Music Row will host music industry booths and mentoring sessions from noon-6 p.m. Friday-Sunday. Attendees can receive hands-on advice, critiques and training on topics such as the craft of songwriting, recording techniques, publishing, song plugging, contracts, product development, audio podcast development, video production, management, and publicity. ***"Resurrection Workshop" for Watercolor and Acrylic Painters -- Watercolor and acrylic painters can bring their failed paintings back to life during artist/instructor Gail McDaniel's "Resurrection Workshop" from June 7-9 at Plaza Artist Materials, 633 Middleton St. in downtown Nashville. The Franklin, Tenn., instructor will show artists at all levels how to solve composition, value and color-related problems using her specially developed collage techniques. McDaniel's process involves applying collage, incorporating fabric, and using painting touchups to create breathtaking mixed-media works of art. Examples of the artist's rescue efforts can be found on her website at http://www.gailmcdanielart.com ."As far as we know, this technique has never been taught in Middle Tennessee," said McDaniel, who was named the PENCIL Foundation's "Volunteer of the Year" in 2012.
